NAGAPATTINAM – TSUNAMI 2004 - GROUND ZERO

Jose

Time stopped at Nagapattinam on 26 December 2004 at 9.06 am. Nagapattinam was a bustling coastal town with a small fishing harbour on the Tamil Nadu coast. The South Indian coast had been just hit by a massive Tsunami on the morning of 26 December. It was called a Black Sunday.

Although the effect was all along the Southern coast, Nagapattinam was it’s epicentre. A massive wave had wiped out the harbour and fishing town. The Situation on 27 December 2004 MEG and Centre, Bangalore was ordered to move a large column to Nagapattinam, and a column of three officers including me, ten JCO’s and 90 OR moved by road and arrived at Nagapattinam by 11.00 am on 27 December 2004. We had been following the TV News on the morning of 26 December, and realised that we need to be ready to move at short notice. Fortunately our disaster relief equipment was in a state of readiness. Disaster and sappers go hand in hand !
